HOW "MY PERSONAL DRIVER" BEGAN...
I have been driving my parents in my spare time for several years. Even before that, I would drive both of my grandmothers and my great aunt shopping in Moose Jaw whenever I visited. They would take advantage of the opportunity to stock up on staples, heavier items, and things they didn't ordinarily buy on their own, because they couldn't easily carry these things. They usually shopped by walking downtown, taking a cab, or getting a ride from a friend. I always took them for a tour around town to see what was new, and we usually stopped somewhere for lunch.
After my Dad became ill, he gave up driving and sold his car. My mom doesn't drive, and relied on him to “go get” things – groceries, mail letters, pick up lottery tickets, pay bills, etc., and to drive her to her weekly hair appointment, and so on. Their independence was significantly changed when he was no longer driving.
It became apparent to my wife and me that there must be many older adults in Saskatoon who are no longer able to drive, or who simply want to avoid the traffic snarls and detours, are tired of trying to find convenient places to park, are worried about driving on ice and snow, or would rather not deal with the rising cost of fuel and maintaining a vehicle.
A visit to your family Doctor might lead to a visit to the lab for tests and a stop at the pharmacy to fill a prescription. What about the grocery store? You might get a clerk to bring your bags out to a car, they may even load them into the trunk for you. But what about when you get home? Who will bring your bags to your door?
From this need to help my parents stay independent, My Personal Driver was conceived. Clients can go on-line, or phone to book their own Personal Driver. You decide how much or how little time you will need. Make as many stops as you want, your Personal Driver will take you whereever you want to go, will wait for you, and will even accompany you if you wish, to help with parcels.
